School Poetry Award Winners

The final event of the weekend, and for many, the most important was the announcement of the School’s Poetry Awards.School Poetry Awards

1st Joseph McArdle, 2nd Shauna Kindlon, 3rd Ciaran Boyle.

The adjudicator in congratulating the winners said that their poetry showed a maturity beyond their years.

Noel Monahan, the established and internationally known Cavan poet adjudicated the second level Schools Award. He remarked on the increasingly high standard that so many are now reaching.  A maturity in thought, a deepening of emotion added to a control of language and structure are so evident in the young people’s work.

The Chairperson, Art Agnew congratulated all those who entered the competition and those who won. Next year, he said, major refurbishment is been carried out on the Kavanagh Centre which will bring it in line with the best in Ireland and beyond. He thanked all the members of the Patrick Kavanagh Society, The Inniskeen Enterprise Development Group, the numerous volunteers and helpers without whom weekends such as this are not possible. He thanked the 2017 Sponsors; The Institute of Education, LacPatrick, Monaghan Co. Council, The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht for their support. We are grateful to a number of sponsors who wish to remain anonymous.
‘The weekend was a great success, we are looking forward to the future’, he said, ‘with the refurbishment and the talented new poets who are out there. We have plenty to be optimistic about’.
